Essentials to have for newborn care

  • Baby wash cloths
  • Fragrance free laundry soap (many like to use Ivory Snow)
  • Receiving blankets & burp cloths
  • A baby carrier you are comfortable wearing
  • CAR SEAT
  • Newborn sized diapers (the umbilical cord care ones can be handy)
  • Q-tips (for cleaning around umbilical cord base)
  • Baby bum cream (I’m fond of Delish Naturals Yum Bum Butter sold at Lizzie Bits, others like Penaten, Vaseline, olive oil, etc)
  • Newborn & 1 to 3 month sized sleepers & onesies (zippers are handy for quick access, but can be irritating to a healing umbilical cord – if so a t-shirt type onesie could be worn underneath, or a sleeper with snaps)
  • Baby bath support gadget or baby bathtub
  • Very gentle baby shampoo
  • A few blankets
  • A bassinette, basket, or prepared bed for co-sleeping
  • Possibly a breast pump & feeding resources
  • Nursing pillow (if desired)
  • Nursing bra (plan to have one or two before birth, but don’t go crazy until your milk supply stabilizes)
  • Nursing pads (either disposable or reusable cloth)
  • Heavy flow pads (there are specific maternity ones, or using the heavy duty overnight ones seems to work as well…and flow will taper down to more moderate and light absorbency requirements too)
  • Comfy dark coloured pajamas/robe/exercise type pants for mom
  • Tops that make for easy nursing access
  • A nursing cover if desired
  • A diaper bag or large purse or smaller back pack
  • Phone numbers of lactation clinic, health care provider’s office, friends who will bring food or go shopping for you…copy of Doula Resource List :)
