FAQ

Are doulas covered by MSP?

Unfortunately in BC doulas are not yet covered by MSP. Some private insurance companies provide some reimbursement, and I am happy to provide receipts for such claims.

Is a doula the same thing as a midwife?

Bluntly, no. Midwives are equivalent to doctors. They provide all prenatal and postnatal care (up to 6 or 8 weeks postpartum). Many will conduct appointments in your home even (a very nice feature for those first few visits after baby is born). They attend the birth as your medical practitioner, and can work collaboratively with other medical staff (yes you can have a hospital birth attended by a midwife). A doula is a skilled support person. Doulas are not medically responsible and do not perform any medical exams or interventions.

Can you only have a doula if you're planning a home birth?

Nope! I go where you go... a doula can join you at home for earlier labour and transition to the hospital later on, meet you at the hospital, or support you at home. If you are planning a home birth, however, you must also have a midwife in attendance.

Are you willing to do a payment plan?

Yes, but I will ask that we create some kind of clear agreement or contract and that we stick to it. And if your financial situation should change during the course of our working relationship, please just communicate with me about this as soon as possible and we can work out something that works for all of us.

Do you work with a back up doula?

I have previously, and am currently looking for a like-minded back up doula. If you are a doula also working in the Kamloops area reading this, and you would be interested in meeting to discuss setting up a back up partnership, let's have tea!

Is there a question you think should be answered on here? Let me know and I will do my best to find an answer and get it up! Chances are if you're thinking it, others are too...
